Iran’s Fars News Agency has reported that the managing director of the National Iranian Gas Company, Mohammad Javad Oji, has announced that Iran’s natural gas resources will be transported to Iraq and Syria via a new pipeline to be constructed based on an agreement recently inked between Tehran and Damascus.
“Under the new deal between the two countries, a gas pipeline will transfer Iran’s gas to Iraq and Syrian territories feeding their power plants and next through southern Lebanon will extend to the Mediterranean Sea and Europe,” Oji said.
The news agency is reporting that he said the 110 MMcm/d (3.88 bcf/d), 56-in. diameter pipeline would be around 2,000 km (1,242 mi), of which 700-1,000 km (435-621 mi) would cross Iranian territory. The cost would be $2-2.5 billion.
Iranian and Syrian energy officials endorsed an agreement to construct a pipeline for transferring Iran’s natural gas to the Middle-Eastern country, a Syrian official announced on Thursday.
“The strategic gas pipeline will transfer gas from Iran to Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean Sea and this is connected to the Arab gas pipeline,” Syrian Oil Minister Sufian Allaw said.
He made the remarks during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Massoud Mir-Kazzemi in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Iraq agreed to participate in the gas project in August and experts from the three countries will begin researching the details to implement the project.
Allaw further explained that the two sides also discussed the transfer of three million cubic meters of Iran’s gas to Syria per day via Turkey.
Syria has the smallest gas deposits in the Middle East after Bahrain and its oil will run out within 18 years.
