The United Arab Emirates is set to further remove subsidies on energy, according to daily newspaper The National.
The cuts will include electricity and gas sold to power generators.
Suhail bin Mohammed al-Mazrouei, the UAE’s Energy Minister, was quoted as saying: “We have done it with petrol and diesel, next is electricity. We must remove remaining subsidies from electricity generation.
“Most of it is not subsidies, the majority of the tariff is fair. But there are old gas contracts that are not realistic and do not reflect fair pricing.”
He gave no details on the timing of the subsidy removals.
Last October, Mazrouei said there was “an urgent need” to cut subsidies in the region’s energy sector. Â
