As national oil companies like Saudi Aramco act on their plans to accelerate oil and gas production, the momentum for project activity in the Middle East continues to pick up. Oil & Gas Middle East lists – in no particular order or ranking – the major contracts secured for diverse projects in the sector for the month of April 2023.

(Editor’s note: This list is not a ranking)

1. Aramco awarded major offshore contracts in production expansion push

Saudi energy giant Aramco awarded major offshore contracts amid aggressive investment push to scale up output.

A pairing of Indian engineering giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Oslo-listed Subsea 7 last month landed multiple EPC contracts from Saudi Aramco under the latter’s long-term agreement (LTA) framework to which a select group of international contractors have access.

The contract includes work on the further development of Aramco’s giant Zuluf oilfield with a project scope that involves both new infrastructure and the upgrading of multiple production deck modules, sources said.

Aramco also awarded a major contract to Saipem to execute the offshore EPCI of one platform topside and the associated subsea flexible, umbilical, and cable system.

3. ADNOC Drilling secured $412 million contract for Upper Zakum project

ADNOC Drilling confirmed a five-year contract for the provision of Integrated Drilling Services (IDS) totaling $412 million from ADNOC Offshore commencing in the second quarter of 2023.

ADNOC Drilling will provide IDS for the development of the Upper Zakum field, the largest producing field in ADNOC’s offshore portfolio. The application of the services provided by ADNOC Drilling will add to the efficiency of production at the project, deliver significant cost savings, and contribute to ADNOC’s plans to responsibly accelerate production capacity growth as global demand for energy continues to increase.

4. QatarEnergy announced a major contract for world’s largest natural gas field

QatarEnergy has awarded a major contract to energy technology company Baker Hughes for the North Field, which is the world’s single largest non-associated natural gas field.

Baker Hughes will supply two main refrigerant compressors (MRCs) for the North Field South (NFS) project, which will be executed by Qatargas. The MRCs are part of two LNG “mega trains” representing 16 million tons per annum (mtpa) of additional capacity that is estimated to further boost Qatar’s LNG production capacity to 126 mtpa.

5. Sparrows Group secured first-ever engineering and maintenance contract in Kuwait

Sparrows Group (Sparrows), the engineering and maintenance services specialist for the global energy and industrial sectors, has been awarded work in Kuwait for the first time. The two scopes cover maintenance and provision of certificates of conformance for onshore rigs across sites for two clients. Sparrows will be responsible for servicing a range of critical drilling equipment, including mud pumps, iron roughnecks, catwalks and top drives, to ensure the rigs are safe to return to the field.
