The Ghasha mega-project is expected to produce more than 1.5 billion standard cubic feet of natural gas per day. With this production, it will be instrumental in providing electricity to more than two million homes in the UAE by around the middle of the decade.

Here are 5 facts you need to know about the project:

  1. The Ghasha mega-project is the world’s largest offshore sour gas development. The multi-billion-dollar project is expected to play a vital role in meeting the UAE’s gas self-sufficiency objective, in line with ADNOC’s integrated gas strategy.
  2. The Hail and Ghasha Development has been divided into several packages. The offshore Package 1 of the development focuses primarily on subsea pipelines and platforms for compression facilities.
  3. In July 2022, ADNOC awarded two contracts totalling $2 billion to ADNOC Drilling for the Hail and Ghasha Development Project. The contracts comprise $1.3 billion for integrated drilling services and fluids and $711 million for providing four island drilling units.
  4. ADNOC is close to finalising the EPC contractors for the megaproject, according to a report. The EPCI work is expected to begin before the end of 2022.
  5. The Ghasha fields are located within the Marawah Marine Biosphere Reserve, west of Abu Dhabi Island that was recognised by the UNESCO in 2007. ADNOC worked in close partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi to study how to minimise the environmental footprint throughout the lifetime of the project.
