Kuwait’s Emir has dissolved the parliament after the cabinet resigned following a dispute over fuel price hikes.
The political crisis has prompted early elections in the GCC state.
Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah issued an emergency government decree on Sunday afternoon dissolving the parliament, although the date for electing new members for the parliament has not yet been set.
The dissolved parliament would have otherwise stayed in office until July of next year.
As a result of the dip in oil prices, Kuwait’s government took several steps to cut fuel subsidies to its citizens.
This included raising fuel prices by nearly 80%; a move that has been met with opposition from various quarters since being proposed.
