Kuwait Energy has started commercial oil production at the Faihaa-2 well in the Block 9 concession at the Iraqi’s southern governorate of Basra, according to an announcement made by the company.
The well, which was dug up in early January and carried out testing production in September, has reportedly stabilised at a rate of 5,600 barrels per day.
Two years earlier, Kuwait Energy and Dragon Oil discovered the first well drilled on Block 9, Faihaa-1.
Kuwait Energy is the operator of the Block 9 concession and holds 60% revenue interest. The rest belongs to Dragon Oil, with 30%, and Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, with 10%.
