A maritime security alert has been issued after Somali pirates hijacked a tanker east of Kenya.
The Singapore-flagged and owned MV Gemini was reportedly seized around 180 nautical miles east of the Kenyan town of Malindi.
The vessel has 25 crewmembers on board and was sailing between Malaysia and Kenya. It is likely to be taken back to the Somali coastline where it will be held for a ransom, although it may also be used as a mothership in order to assist attacks on other vessels.
