Sparrows Group, the Aberdeen-based offshore crane services, lifting engineering, fluid power and pipe/cable lay technology specialist, has appointed Leigh Howarth to its board as chief financial officer; he takes up his post immediately.

Doug Sedge, chief executive officer of Sparrows says of the appointment: “I am delighted Sparrows has attracted someone with Leigh’s wealth of financial and oilfield experience to further strengthen our leadership team as we continue to grow.”

Leigh joins Sparrows from North Sea operator EnQuest, where in 2010 he assisted with the company’s IPO to the London Stock Exchange. A graduate of the University of Sheffield and qualified chartered accountant, Howarth entered the oil & gas industry in 1996 with PGS Production, initially as financial controller until 1999 when he was promoted to group finance director.

Following the acquisition of PGS by Petrofac in 2002, Leigh was appointed Petrofac’s group financial controller based in the United Arab Emirates. Leigh returned to Aberdeen in 2006 taking up the role of managing director, Petrofac Training, a position he held until 2009.

Leigh Howarth says: “Sparrows is one of the iconic brands in the offshore industry; I’m excited to be joining the business and look forward to leading the finance team, and working with our external partners, to deliver growing success.”
