Issues surrounding emerging energy such as security of supply, renewable energy and sustainable development will be discussed by world experts at an upcoming forum in Dubai next year. The forum is the first of its kind on energy to be held in the Emirate.
The Dubai Global Energy Forum (DGEF) 2011 to be held between April 17-19 next year will run under the theme of “Energy Challenges and Opportunities – Sustainable Future” and is expected to attract about 1,500 participants ranging from CEOs to analysts and research and development professionals.
With the challenge of dealing with fossil fuel-dependent economies such as Dubai’s, the forum will address issues on the introduction for renewable energy, smart networks and more importantly policy changes that will facilitate these.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Dubai that also included the official unveiling of the DGEF website, Saeed Al Tayer, vice chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy – the body responsible for overseeing the energy supply for Dubai – said: “The forum will shed light on the challenges and opportunities for the energy sector, which are based on energy security for supply and demand, foreseeing the ever-increasing demand for, and the continuous governance of, the energy sector.
“The Supreme Council of Energy pays great attention to the important issues of the energy sector, such as power generation and water desalination according to the goal of enhancing Dubai’s production capacity to keep pace with the growing demand for power in the Emirate.”
The Middle East currently trails behind Europe and the US in its uptake and deployment of renewable energy said Al Tayer but with the right support and shifts in policy the region could make up ground he said.
He emphasised that the forum will also benefit national and international markets with insights and outcomes that will support the use of nuclear energy for sustainable development, building on recent changes to make the best use of its technologies and minimising its risks.
