Iran is seeking to greatly increase the amount of gas bought from Azerbaijan, local media has reported.
Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohammed Baqer Bahrami revealed that Iran is looking to buy as much gas as Azerbaijan can supply.
“We are ready to buy up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan,” Azeri Trend News quoted Bahrami as saying.
Azerbaijan currently supplies 2 million cubic metres of gas per day to Iran. From that figure about 800,000 cubic metres is supplied to the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic under a swap deal, with the rest supplied under a short-term contract.
The gas is intended for the northern regions of Iran, which are a long way from the country’s gas fields, and closer to Azerbaijan. The two countries are connected by the Gazi-Magomed-Astara-Biand gas pipeline, which is 1,474.5km long.
