A deal that was struck between the Italian oil and gas contractor Saipem and the Algerian state-controlled energy giant Sonatrach is being investigated by authorities in the North African state as part of the ongoing corruption probe.
Dow Jones reported that sources close to the matter have said that one contract being scrutinised is a US$580 million deal regarding a gas pipeline system in the north east of Algeria.
The investigation is studying a number of contracts Sonatrach signed with service providers to check for irregularities.
The investigation was instigated by the Algerian government after the former Sonatrach CEO Mohamed Meziene and a number of other top level management figures were suspended for alleged corruption.
