Matthias Bichsel, director of Projects and Technology at Shell, told delegates at the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) in Qatar’s capital Doha, that as the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, Qatar is at the forefront of providing cleaner energy.

“Increasing natural gas production and shipping it through the LNG global markets means that more natural gas will be available to replace coal as the fuel for power plants,” Bichsel said.

“Qatar with its massive gas resources and visionary leadership, has a crucial role in meeting the global energy challenge,” he added.

Bichsel also underlined the importance of proper investment in ensuring the LNG industry has the best technology, workforce and long-term strategy.

The Shell official also mentioned the company’s recent investment in floating LNG technology, said to be costing the company in the region of US$50 billion.

“Our floating LNG solution will raise the bar on several fronts, not least cost effectiveness, safety and reducing our carbon footprint and flexibility of delivery,” Bichsel said.

The IPTC is taking place between the 7-9 December in Doha, Qatar. Several high-level delegates and speakers are attending the conference from companies such as Saudi Aramco, QP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Kuwait Oil Company.
