A senior Iranian energy official has denied recent reports that India is about to invest US$6.5 billion on the development of the Gulf state’s gas fields.
Indian newspapers reported that government officials met with visiting Iranian deputy oil minister and National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) managing director, Seifollah Jashnsaz to discuss a number of issues including the investment and the country importing 5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year from Iran.
“The negotiations [between Iranian and Indian oil and gas officials] has had satisfactory progress but we have not yet reached a final agreement concerning the amount of investment by Indian companies in Iran’s fields,” Ali Kheirandish, director general of Iran LNG Company is quoted by the Iranian news agency Press TV as saying.
Indian media outlets also said that Jashnsaz was urged to honour an LNG import agreement signed by the two countries in 2005. Kheirandish dismissed this and claimed that he was unaware of a deal for such a large amount of LNG was in place.
