A senior Chinese energy official, Yan Cunzhang, has said that the Chuandongbei gas project, a joint venture between the US supermajor Chevron and the state-owned energy giant China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) expects to start producing gas in 2010.
Reuters reported that Cunzhang, president of PetroChina’s foreign cooperation administration, said that Chevron will operate the high-sulphur field and has a 49% stake with CNPC owning the other 51%. The 30-year production-sharing contract was signed in 2007.
Chuandongbei has proven gas reserves of 176 billion cubic metres (bcm) and the gas will be processed at two separate facilities with a combined capacity of 7.6 bcm per annum or 740 million cubic feet per day.
The block is located in the in southwestern Sichuan province.
