A US$8 billion gas exploration deal between British supermajor BP and Jordan is to be discussed by the country’s cabinet before it is given the green light.
Jordanian news agency Petra reported that the Risha gas field agreement would be put in front of Prime Minister Nadir al-Dhahbi by the head of the Jordan’s National Petroleum Company (NPC) for cabinet approval.
If BP is given permission to proceed it will make an initial investment of $237 for the first exploration and evaluation phase which will last for three to four years. If the energy giant then proceeds to full develop it will make an investment of between $8-9 billion.
The Risha field near Iraq currently has a modest output of 22 million cubic feet per day (cfd), but Jordan believes output could rise to 300 million cfd.
