Chavez may send Venezuelan diplomats back to Iraq

Leader of oil rich state says ambassador may return to Baghdad soon

The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has said that the country may re-establish ties with Iraq, six years after ending relations with the Gulf state due to the Iraq war.

“We are considering sending our ambassador to Iraq again,” Reuters quotes Chavez as saying.

Chavez has always been a vociferous critic of the US-led invasion and has always maintained that the reason behind it was Iraq’s vast oil reserves rather than the “War on Terror”.

Although the US is a major importer of Venezuelan oil there is no love lost between the two countries.

Chavez is also a strong supporter of OPEC and believes that the 12 member states should form closer ties to ensure they get the best price for their hydrocarbon reserves.
