Lukoil chief promises 15,000 jobs in Iraq

Jobs depend on Russian supermajor winning auction for Iraqi oilfield

Aswat Aliraq reported that Vagit Alekperov has identified al-Qarna al-Gharbiya 2 in the Gulf state as the oilfield Lukoil is interested in developing.

“Lukoil, which is currently working in 42 countries, is getting ready to work in Iraq and employ 15,000 workers there,” Alekperov is quoted by Aswat Aliraq as saying.

Lukoil initially signed a 23-year development contract for the al-Qarna al-Gharbiya 2 with the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq in 1997, but the contract was rescinded in 2002.

The Moscow-based Lukoil is the second largest publicly traded oil company in the world, behind ExxonMobil, in terms of proven oil and gas reserves.
