Iran’s embattled natural gas industry finally had some good news over the weekend when it was announced that almost 13.7 million barrels of gas condensates had been exported from the South Pars gas field’s phases 6-8.
Iranian newspaper, the Tehran Times reported that the exports, worth around US$610 million, had been mostly shipped to China, the UAE, Japan, Singapore and the Netherlands.
“The South Pars phases 6-8 development plan started in October 2008 with the aim of producing 104 million cubic meters of natural gas, 158,000 barrels of gas condensates, and 4,450 tons of butane and propane on a daily basis,” a project manager on the is reported as saying.Â
“In the mentioned period, 17,900 tons of propane and 13,200 tons of butane have also been produced in the South Pars phases 6-8,” he added.Â
The South Pars gas field is shared with Qatar and is believed to have the world’s largest reserves of natural gas.
The Iranian side of the field has been hit with delays in production due to international trade sanctions, due to the country’s nuclear developments.
