ABB wins Algerian substation contract

ABB has won orders worth US$56 million to supply two substations and ten mobile substations in Algeria.

The contract, which includes two 60kV gas-insulated substations (GIS), was awarded by the state owned power company Sonelgaz.

GIS substations are extremely compact and are the preferred option for use in urban environments,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s power systems division.

The first of the GIS installations will be replacing an existing substation in Algiers, while the second will be installed in Oran to supply electricity for a planned recreational and commercial development in the area.

Under the contract, ABB will design, engineers, supply, install and commission the substations. The mobile substations can be used to temporarily replace fixed installations, enable utilities to carry out maintenance work and offer a rapid response to power outages.
