Qatargas 2: 10 facts

The Qatargas 2 project has been in the headlines after it was offically inaugurated by the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani at a ceremony in Ras Laffan City, Qatar. Here Arabianoilandgas give you our 10 favourite facts about the project.

1. Through the Qatargas 2 project, not only will Qatar be capable of supplying up to 20% of the United Kingdom’s gas needs, but the country’s reserves could meet the UK’s gas needs for the next 250 years.

2. The Qatargas 2 workforce consists of 30,000 people from 50 nationalities. During construction, 11.2 million man hours were worked on site.

3. Qatargas 2 contains enough cables to stretch from Doha to London. The two trains are powered by a generator that produces 200 megawatts of electricity, enough power to generate a small town.

4. Over 300,000 separate systematic tests were carried out before commissioning each train.

5. The 30 offshore wells were completed 27 rig-months ahead of schedule. Some of the pre-fabricated modules for the offshore platforms weighed up to 1000 tonnes – about the same as 700 family cars.

6. The three platforms combined will produce 2.9 billion cubic feet of gas per day. The gas flows to Ras Laffan under its own natural pressure thus alleviating the need for pumps.

7. Qatargas 2 saw the fastest wells ever drilled in the North Field. The record now stands at 14,500 feet of rock in just 33 days, a rate of nearly 20 feet per hour.

8. Over 4,500 coral colonies were carefully detached from the seafloor, numbered, tagged and moved to new locations.

9. The vessels transporting the LNG to the UK, the Q-Max, will carry 9.5 million cubic feet of LNG, enough to fill London’s Royal Albert Hall, three times over.

10. The South Hook terminal in Milford Haven in South Wales is Europe’s largest LNG terminal. During construction, 1.5 million cubic metres of earth were removed to provide a hollow in which the five storage tanks would be less visible.
