Algerian state-owned energy group Sonatrach has made a gas discovery in Gourara basin in the southwest of Algeria, the company said in statement.

The discovery was done in association with foreign partners including Royal Dutch Shell and Liwa Energy.

Tests showed a flow rate of 5,309 cubic metres per hour, the discovery was made in Zerafa area after drilling to a depth of 2,358 metres at blocs 322b, 345 and 346, Sonatrach said in the statement released on its website.

The gas discovery is the fifth during the first quarter 2009 only; Sonatrach made 16 discoveries in 2008.

Liwa Energy is the energy subsidiary of Abu Dhabi state investment arm Mubadala.
