Offshore computing power

Geotrace provide data processing for offshore Libyan exploration.

As part of a seismic acquisition contract awarded by BP Exploration Libya, subsurface imaging solutions firm Geotrace will provide one of the world’s largest onboard seismic data processing projects.

The company, through its long-term agreement with Wavefield Inseis, will outfit the Geowave Endeavor seismic ship with a large onboard computer centre, allowing the data to be managed more quickly and cost effectively.

The 17 000 square kilometres exploration project will gather 3D seismic data from Libya’s offshore Sirt basin. Geotrace will complete the processing using one of the largest Linux clusters afloat, aboard Wavfield’s new flagship the Geowave Endeavor. The onboard processing will include surface related multiple elimination (SRME), pre-stack time migration (PSTM) and dense velocity analysis.

“This type of onboard data processing project is ideal for Geotrace,” said Bill Schrom CEO of Geotrace. “It will enable us to utilize some of our advanced imaging techniques while processing in an onboard environment.”
