Bahrain’s Energy Central has been awarded the contract to design, build and operate the seawater desalination plant for the US $6 billion Durrat Al Bahrain mixed-use development. The concession period is 25 years.

The plant will provide irrigation water for the development’s 15 islands, using reverse osmosis technology. The facility will start up in stages, with an initial capacity of 4,000 m3 per day, rising to 20,000 m3 by 2009. At full capacity, it will produce some 30,000 m3 of desalinated water. The desalination plant will be located on the mainland at a distance from the resort.

Durrat Al Bahrain is the Kingdom’s largest planned luxury residential, commercial and tourist development, spanning 21 km2 and is expected to be able accommodate more than 60,000 permanent residents, as well as 4,500 visitors each day.
