Wintershall spuds its first offshore well for the Shuwaihat project in Abu Dhabi during the ADIPEC 2016 week.
In July 2015, Wintershall completed the first onshore drilling of the sour gas and condensate field Shuwaihat together with its partner ADNOC and the Austrian OMV. After compiling and analysing the data from the onshore field SH-5, Wintershall now spudded the first offshore well SH-6.
In order to establish a supply base, Wintershall opted for an individual solution rather than for the common trail and developed the local “Mugharraq” port for its operations. This way, Wintershall is saving time and budget by building its first E&P supply base. Mugharraq Port is well located for supplying offshore operations in the whole Western Region. By building the first E&P supply base Wintershall is contributing important infrastructure and thus giving an economic impulse to the region.
For the offshore well SH-6, Wintershall also implemented a safety concept. Throughout the Health, Safety and Environmental Impact Assessment (HSEIA) process, potential hazards and impacts were identified and mitigation measures including emergency plans, training sessions, equipment specifications, monitoring requirements, etc. were defined.
