Gemini Energy eyes Orpic software contract

Energy trading company in talks to secure a deal to sell EMC2 cloud computing software

Gemini Energy has revealed that it is negotiating with the Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) to bag a contract to sell its client’s cloud computing service.

The Dubai-based energy trading company had signed a deal with US software major EMC2 ‘about six to eight months back’ to sell the latter’s energy sector-related software products in the region, Gemini Energy’s managing director told Oil & Gas Middle East.

“We have won a very big contract for EMC2 in Oman. We are in talks with Orpic,” Sudhakar R. Rao said.

In the UAE, Gemini Energy was in talks with ‘two or three companies’, and that ‘it is just a matter of time before we bag them (EMC2) a contract’, in Abu Dhabi, Rao further revealed.

“Basically they (EMC2) are a cloud computing company. We are promoting their software to the oil and gas companies in the region. As part of the contract, EMC2 will provide their products and we will receive a fixed remuneration for our services and promotions,” he said.

“Cloud computing has so far been an in-house aspect of the companies, but down the line as cyber security becomes a major issue this will not anymore be an in house thing,” Rao said in reference to the success of EMC2 in the region.

Gemini Energy’s core business lies in trading with the products and services of its overseas clients – mainly from India, China and Malaysia – to regional oil and gas players.

Gemini Energy trades in providing all ancillaries and equipment for the oil and gas industry, like pipes, valves, flanges, fittings. The company also stock some of the items and sell them.

The company – which has traded with industry majors including Saudi Aramco, Qatar Petroleum, ADNOC, ENOC, Takreer and PDO – has ‘undeniably’ suffered a dent in its business in the GCC due to the decline in global crude oil prices.

“Absolutely, without any denial, it (fall in oil prices) has affected our business. It has affected our entire spectrum related to the services and supply for the oil and gas sector,” Rao said.

“Having said that, we are planning expansion of our energy products in the Middle East and in parts of Africa. We are waiting for market conditions to get better than what it is today,” he said.

Gemini Energy is presently working on a contract with ENOC to provide power to its temporary facilities in Abu Dhabi for two years.

Gemini Group has also recently forayed into the real estate sector in Dubai by launching its maiden ‘affordable housing’ project, as a diversification strategy.
