Saudi Aramco has awarded contract extensions to three of Rowan Companies’ rigs working in the Middle East.

The drilling firm’s Arch Rowan, Charles Rowan, and Rowan Middletown rigs have all been retained by the Saudi energy giant on day rates of $69,000 respectively.

Rowan’s fleet status report for August 2015 has revealed the extent of Aramco’s effort to drive down day rates.

Aramco has an additional six rig contacts with Rowan, with day rates ranging from $195,000 per day to $106,000 per day – way in excess of the rate agreed for the three new contract extensions.

Maersk also has a contract with Rowan for its Rowan California rig that runs until September 2016, and pays a daily rate of $144,000 a day, according to figures in the firm’s fleet update.

The report also revelaed that the firm has deals in place worth in excess of $600,000 a day on three of its rigs working in the Gulf of Mexico.
