Iran to build satellite platforms for South Pars

Phases 17 and 18 to produce 50mcm of natural gas a day

The Iranian Offshore Engineering and Construction Company (IOEC) will build and deliver satellite platforms for Phases 17 and 18 of the giant South Pars gas field, IRNA news agency reprots.

The two phases currently have four platforms with a total capacity of 2 bcf and when fully operational will produce 50mcm of natural gas daily, 80,000 barrels of condensate and 400 tonnes a day of sulfur.

Annual ethane output is projected to reach 1mn tonnes a year and 1.05mn tonnes a year of liquefied gas. South Pars biggest phase, Phase 12, came online in March, adding to the country’s crude oil exports.

Phase 12 exploits 3bn feet of sour gas, the equivalent of 84mn cubic meters, and after separating its gas derivatives, injects some 75mn cubic meters of sweet gas to the trans-Iranian gas pipeline network.

It boasts three main derricks and one satellite derrick. which together transfer that volume of gas to the refineries in the Iranian mainland, adding to the country’s refined products for export.

An Iranian official said in March current production from South Pars stands at 15bn cubic metres, with Phase 12 expected to start producing at least 500 mcf/d of gas before the cold season starts for injection into the national pipeline.

He added that Phase 12 is under development to produce 75mn cubic meters (mcm) of rich gas for delivery to national gas pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plants.

Out of this, 25 mcm will be injected to national pipeline and the rest will go for LNG production. This phase is also expected to produce 120,000 b/d of gas condensate and 750 tons a day of sulfur.

The main contractor in the development of Phase 12 is Tehran-based Petropars.
