Total held a one-day clean-up event off the coast of Halul Island in Qatar as part of its strategy for environmental protection and sustainability.

Over 200 of its employees and contractors took part at the clean-up, which resulted in over a tonne of waste being collected.

Total has processing plants located on Halul Island, using oil and gas from nearby fields including Al Khalij field.

“The protection of our environment is an important part of our corporate social responsibility”, said Guillaume Chalmin, managing director of Total E&P Qatar and Group Representative.

“It is necessary that we keep our environment clean and preserve the natural resources of our host country Qatar”, he added.

Heading the campaign, Ahmed Tarzi, Total’s site manager at Halul Island, said: “It was great to see the commitment and dedication of our colleagues in keeping the coastline clean. We hope this will inspire our counterparts to join in the efforts in maintaining the environment. At the end, we had fun while making a difference.”

Total has been present in Qatar for almost 80 years. In February 2014, it set up a new joint venture with Qatar petroleum to further develop the Khalij field over the next 25 years. Total is also the founding partner of Qatargas 1 and owns an interest in Qatargas 2.
