Oil & Gas Middle East meets Rickey Lindsey, vice president of operations for the Middle East, Africa & Australia at regional service Total Safety

While there may be many safety service providers in the market. The majority of them only focus on particular threats.

Enter Total Safety; a company which provides an integrated suite of core safety and compliance service offerings which meets the diverse and comprehensive needs of its many different clients.

As Rickey Lindsey, vice president of operations for the Middle East, Africa & Australia of Total Safety says, “no competitor possesses Total Safety’s scale, relationships and reputation for delivering the full spectrum of safety and compliance solutions necessary to ensure comprehensive risk management globally for multiple facilities.”

Since its inception in 1994, the company has grown to provide a wide portfolio of services including air, gas, fire, training, medical, industrial hygiene and communications to meet clients’ many needs.

Extending beyond its immediate safety services, the company boasts the industry’s largest fleet of safety rental equipment. It has developed technology such as the U.S.-patented High Pressure Breathing Air Loop System; the Centralized Confined Space Monitoring System and the Air Cobra, a high-volume breathing air compressor system.

“Total Safety provides a complete offering of integrated safety services throughout the Middle East to the upstream and downstream oil and gas market,” says Lindsey.

The company offers a range of services and technical expertise through its three primary solution sets; compliance and inspection, professional and technical services and specialized safety personnel.

Within the services it provides, the company offers equipment rental and sales for everything from respiratory protection, gas detection, H2S protection and fire protection.

According to Lindsey, the company has gone eight years without a Lost Time Accident. “Safety is paramount to everything we do,” says Lindsey. “We are extremely proud of our safety record globally and believe we have a world-class organization in that regard.”

Total Safety services major oil and gas companies, NOCs, international drilling contractors and oil field service contractors on a direct basis. In the Middle East, the company is split evenly between its upstream and downstream segments.

The company’s revenue has continued to grow over the years, and Lindsey remains confident. “Over the next two years we hope to have a strong presence in the downstream business to match our upstream portfolio,” he said.

The company continues to grow in Saudi Arabia, its largest market. “We enjoy a number of strong and long-term relationships with our partners there.

Total safety first entered the market through its global relationships with the major oil and gas companies and major international drilling contractors and has since developed solid relationships with the regional NOCs and others,” says Lindsey.

But the company’s presence in the Middle East/North Africa market is not without threat sand challenges. Particularly the political unrest.

According to Lindsey, the Arab Spring which is prevalent in many countries which Total Safety has operations in, has led to several pushes of planned work and in some cases, resulted in customers deciding not to do the work at all.

“Delays in projects and/or rigs that go unmanned have an impact on our business,” he said. Additionally, the ever changing regulations for moving personnel and equipment between countries can also create challenges.

The company has a strong presence throughout the Gulf region, as well as Egypt, Libya Tunisia and Algeria. It also operates on the western coast of Africa and throughout North America.

But Lindsey remains confident in Total Safety and the services it provides. “Total safety prides itself on finding safety and compliance solutions that meet or exceed ever-changing regulations and standards,” he said.

The company is remarkably flexible, and has the capacity to adapt to global standards, Western-based standards or more local/regional ones.

A well trained team, where the operations department co-ordinates with the legal and compliance teams have helped the company stay ahead of the curve.

“The company’s safety solutions help National Oil Companies remain compliant and protect the safety of their workers, most importantly, and their operational assets.”

Total Safety utilizes a range of services, safety equipment and technical products to support its clients’ increasingly complex risk mitigation requirements.

Leveraging its onsite delivery model, the company has developed long-standing, direct client partnerships with some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world.
According to Lindsey, it is often the “first call” when addressing mission-critical, time sensitive safety and compliance needs.

Following an acquisition of another key downstream service company in the U.S. almost a decade ago, new management has leveraged the combined platform’s scale through a specialized set of technical services to execute a refined corporate strategy focused on the company’s mission “to ensure the safe Wellbeing of Workers Worldwide”.
