Iraq’s is purchasing drones from the USA to invigilate its offshore oil platforms, according to a Reuters report.

An official from the Office of Security Cooperation in Iraq confirmed to Reuters that drones are on order from the US for the Iraqi navy’s use in protecting Iraqi oil infrastructure, while declining to give further details.

“According to the energy police plans, we intend to use the drones by the end of this year,” head of the energy protection force, Major General Hamid Ibrahim, told Reuters. “We are in the process of training engineers.”

Drones – formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles – have played a major role in US military and CIA campaigns in Afghanistan and Yemen, and have become popular with law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
