Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that the October attack on Iranian oil tanker SABITI was backed by a government, state news agency SHANA reported.
“Based on the information received, the attack on the Iranian oil tanker was carried out by one or more governments,” Zarif said, as quoted by ICANA. Zarif called the strike a sophisticated, government-sponsored attack, but did not accuse any nation in particular.
The tanker was hit twice, 60 miles off of Jeddah Port, damaging its storeroom and leading to an oil spill which the NITC said was contained.
“Iran will give a harsh response to those involved in Iranian oil tanker,” Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani said in a meeting with Russia’s envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, according to SHANA.
The incident was reported to the United Nations, Seyed Abbas Mousavi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at a press conference.
