Global engineering and industrial software company AVEVA has launched a new tool, AMe, which combines the Industrial Internet of Things, virtual reality and augmented reality for maintenance. As complex as that may sound, it’s designed to simplify the diagnostic and process.

Italpresse Gauss will use the software to perform maintenance on its light metal casting solutions. The process: Point a tablet with a camera towards a machine part to get augmented data and maintenance documentation directly on the screen. Then, an engineer with a virtual reality headset can guide the user’s maintenance team remotely.

For oil & gas operations in locations that are difficult to reach or far from service centres, physically removing and shipping faulty parts overseas leads to machine downtime. While virtual and augmented reality will not be able to address all maintenance issues, they could decrease downtime and expenses for processes that can be led remotely.
