Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund plans to launch The Rig, an entertainment and tourism project set on an offshore rig.
The project will be located on the Arabian Gulf, spanning a total area of more than 150,000 square metres. It will include three hotels, world-class restaurants, helipads, and a range of extreme sports and aquatic activities.
PIF tweeted a promotional video showing water slide, roller coasters, pools, and more on the platform.
The PIF wrote that it was “expected to attract tourists from around the world, while being especially popular with citizens and residents of the GCC countries and the region.”
The project is a component of its 2021-2025 strategy, but the PIF did not disclose when the project would launch.
Saudi Arabia is investing heavily to move away from economic dependency on oil, with the entertainment and tourism sectors as key components of its wider plan.
