Iraq’s Basrah natural gas project begins operations

The first train of Iraq Basrah natural gas liquids plant (BNGL) which is being constructed by China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corp (CPECC) was successfully put into operation, the company said in a statement.

The project aims to increase capacity by 40% by adding a 400 million standard cubic feet per day (cf/d) greenfield gas processing plant equipped with two trains, with 200 million cf/d capacity each.

In 2019, Basrah Gas Co, the joint venture between Anglo-Dutch major Shell and the Iraqi government, awarded the contract to Chinese state-backed contractor CPECC to build the natural gas liquids plant. CPECC is responsible for all the construction, installation and the site works for the plant.

The BNGL project, which is located at Ar Ratawi oilfield, 75 kms west of Basrah, adopts world-leading processes to collect and process associated gas from Rumaila, Zubair, and West Qurna1 oilfields, including two natural gas light hydrocarbon recovery and treatment trains.
