GE Gas Power has announced a significant boost to Iraq’s power generation capacity achieved in partnership with the country’s Ministry of Electricity.
The company has successfully serviced and upgraded 1400 megawatts (MW) of gas turbine capacity across the country in the first half of this year.
The strategic move aims to enhance power generation capabilities and optimise the efficiency and performance of the units, just in time for the peak summer demand.
Two gas turbines, with a combined capacity of 200 MW, underwent comprehensive maintenance work, including major overhauls, at the Khor Al-Zubair power plant.
Inspection and replacement of key gas turbine components were conducted at the Shatt Al-Basra power plant, resulting in a 100 MW gas turbine service completion.
A notable highlight is the successful maintenance work carried out at Al Khairat Power Plant, where six gas turbines, totalling 600 MW, received careful attention from the ministry’s teams.
GE provided invaluable technical and engineering support, along with spare parts. Also, GE teams wrapped up their endeavors with a 100 MW gas turbine upgrade at the same power plant.
At Al Quds Power Plant, GE and MoE teams successfully upgraded two gas turbines, bolstering their total capacity to 200 MW.
GE also implemented an Advanced Gas Path (AGP) technology upgrade on 200 MW gas turbines at the Nineveh Power Plant. This transformative upgrade has significantly improved output, efficiency, and availability while reducing fuel consumption, thereby boosting the overall performance of the power plant.
Since 2011, GE has played a pivotal role in Iraq’s power sector, adding over 19,000 megawatts of power to the national grid.
In 2021, GE introduced a comprehensive energy transition plan encompassing their 240 gas turbines installed across the country, including Northern Iraq.
