ENGIE expects financial close on $800 million water project soon

International water and power developer ENGIE expects to achieve financial close for the Mirfa 2 seawater desalination project in the coming weeks, a senior company executive has revealed.

ENGIE recently won a tender to develop and operate the Mirfa 2 Project, valued at $800 million and with a daily water production capacity of 20 million gallons.

Operation of the plant is scheduled to commence in 2026, according to Frédéric Claux, Managing Director Flexible Generation and Retail, Africa Middle East Asia at ENGIE.

He revealed that ENGIE has invested approximately $12 billion (AED44 billion) in energy, water desalination, and green hydrogen projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Claux highlighted the company’s commitment to further expansion, particularly in the UAE, which is considered a crucial strategic market in the Middle East.

Recognising the UAE market as a key player in the Middle East and a hub for business growth, ENGIE aims to bolster its presence and achieve further development in the UAE.

ENGIE is also involved in the development of the $1 billion Al Ajban Solar PV project, generating 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of energy.
