Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has won an order worth US$615 million to build an ultra-deepwater drillship for Fred Olsen Energy of Norway. The contract also includes an option the company can exercise to purchase a similar second drillship.
The vessel, measuring 229 metres long, 36 metres wide and with the water depth capacity up to 3,600 metres (12,000 feet), is due for delivery in August 2013. The turnkey project includes spare parts, owner furnished equipment and a project team.
The drillship will be equipped with seven ram BOPs; have dual activity capability, five mud pumps; a 165-tonne capacity heave-compensated crane with a maximum capacity of 1,250 tonnes. It will be capable of accommodating up to 210 people.
HHI claims to have won the most drillship orders in the world this year with six drillships and options for an additional three.
To date, HHI has won orders for 34 ships worth a total of US$9.2 billion, this amounts to the company achieving 46% of its new orders target of $19.8 billion in its shipbuilding, offshore and plant business segments, this year.
