As the unrest in Libya spreads across the country, oil and gas output from the country continues to be affected significantly according to Agence France Press (AFP).
The news agency reported that Italy’s ENI, the biggest foreign energy major in Libya, said supplies through the Greenstream gas pipeline between the two countries had been halted after it suspended some of its operations in the energy-rich country.
Libya accounts for 13% of Italy’s gas supplies and almost a quarter of its oil but officials said they were not concerned because of reserves and the possibility of increased shipments from other countries.
French energy giant Total said on Wednesday that it was “starting to suspend” part of its oil production in Libya, AFP reported. It also reported that German oil firm Wintershall had stopped oil production in Libya due to the security situation in the violence-hit country.
The Libyan domestic market consumes 270,000 bpd, while the country exports 85% of its crude to Europe , mainly to Italy and Germany. Exports to the US represents 5% while China receives 10% of the Libyan export.
