The 2010 Outstanding Leader of The Year Award at the prestigious Oil & Gas Awards went to Mohamed Al-Muflehi, Manager of Health, Safety & Environment at the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO).

Nominated by his colleagues for his achievements in the last 12 months, Al-Muflehi said the award was an honour and praised the support he had received from management in making the nomination successful.

“We have been introducing and implementing innovative, behaviour based safety programmes and I’ve personally been involved in the training and overseeing the programme for over 2000 employees across the company this year alone,” he said.

A notable speaker in national and international conferences, society of petroleum (SPE) events and workshops, seminars and workshops on the subject of the Successful Behavioral Safety Audit Program, his most recent paper presented recently in GASTECH, SPE Annual Dinner, and in ADIPEC 2010.

“Results proven, growth-oriented, strong decisive leadership with interdisciplinary teams, driving vision, achieving critical strategic goals he has been a driving force for company achievement towards world class HSE Excellence with the lowest LTIFR and TRIR in the regional upstream industry,” said Al-Muflehi.

Strong, practical management style centered on impact-driven models to achieve company KPIs with zero oil spill, zero flaring, zero fatalities.

Pioneered and implemented highly successful projects  during the last 12 months include:

  • Automated External Defibrillators (AED) Heart Attack First Response Mobile Units in the company headquarters, the first such project to be implemented in Abu Dhabi Oil Companies & even in the Middle East Region
  • Trained over 100 personnel in various divisions and departments as AED Rescue Team in the case of heart attack in the company headquarters
  • The project won the prestigious ADNOC HSE Award in Health on 26th May 2010
  • Under his guidance , ADMA-OPCO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) to jointly conduct monthly health lectures, programmes and events, again the 1st such agreement to be signed by an oil & gas company in the Middle East.
  • The recent fatal accidents in three ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) group companies all involved temporary contractors. This raised the question whether ADMA-OPCO’s protective systems are effective enough to combat the dangers of H2S.

Mohamed also pioneered a Comprehensive H2S Training, Awareness and Assurance program by employing several innovative educational solutions at once, the learning method of making all our workers aware about H2S is significantly improved.

The increased awareness of workers resulted in a 30% increase of the number of H2S near misses raised. Actions made on these near misses, reduced the near miss related incidents from five the previous year to zero this year. “Within the ADNOC Group of companies there is a culture of sharing best practice, and this campaign has raised H2S awareness across the board, and has changed the workforces and contractors behaviour towards H2S. ADGAS has already borrowed some of the concepts and used it in their campaigns,” explained Al Muflehi.

His full interview will be published in the January edition of Oil & Gas Middle East.
