Individuals falsely representing themselves as BP employees are offering applicants training and promising job placement for a fee in and around the coastal communities worst hit by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster zone.

The oil company has issued a warning to local residents and media outlets in the Gulf States in response to the fraudsters offering fat pay checks in exchange for an upfront fee.

“It is important that the public be aware that this is a scam,” said Neil Chapman, BP spokesperson. “BP does not charge to train and hire applicants.”

BP is working closely with local authorities to prosecute the perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law. A press statement from the Joint Information Center has said: “If you or someone you know has been charged fees for training, please contact local law enforcement.”

“BP is committed to protecting the wildlife, marshlands, and residents. We will continue to engage the community in the Gulf region and provide services to ensure that no one, especially those affected by the DeepWater Horizon Incident, are taken advantage of.”

BP’s most recent attempt to stem the flow of oil – the “top kill” has not been successful, and oil continues to gush into the Gulf of Mexico. BP started the “top kill” operations to stop the flow of oil from the MC252 well in the Gulf of Mexico on May 26.

The procedure was intended to stem the flow of oil and gas and ultimately kill the well by injecting heavy drilling fluids through the blow-out preventer on the seabed, down into the well.

Despite successfully pumping a total of over 30,000 barrels of heavy mud, in three attempts at rates of up to 80 barrels a minute, and deploying a wide range of different bridging materials, the operation did not overcome the flow from the well.

The Government, together with BP, have therefore decided to move to the next step in the subsea operations, the deployment of the Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) Cap Containment System.

The company has issued a statement suggesting people seeking legitimate hiring opportunities with BP, should visit the website at deepwaterhorizonresponse.com
