Yemen Energy minister Amir Al-Aydarous yesterday said that his country is interested in joining the international cartel of gas exporting nations, GECF, and has initiated talks with exisiting members.

“Gas producers countries need to defend their interests to keep the prices at fair levels,” said Al-Aydarous, but he avoided picking a benchmark or suitable price bracket for natural gas exports.

“We started to export LNG six months ago, and have reached a production capacity of 6.7m tonne per year,” he added.

The minister said that 20 foreign companies work in Yemen including France’s Total and SK from South Korea.

“We will launch the fifth bid round for gas exploration very soon,” said the minister without giving an exact date.

Regional members of the GECF include Qatar, Iran, Libya, Algeria and Egypt. The Russian Federation is also a founder member.
