Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) of Kuwait has launched an awareness campaign to spread the culture of recycling in a bid to protect the environment from the damage caused by plastic waste. The initiative was launched in collaboration with plastic recycling firm Omniya, making PIC the first company in the Kuwaiti oil sector to take such step.
Ibrahim Mohammad Almusaiteer, deputy chief executive officer for administration and finance affairs at PIC, told RPME: “The campaign is a result of PIC’s conviction to save and preserve the community and environment which plays an impactful role in achieving sustainability.
“It is our responsibility to embrace innovative ideas leading to maintaining the Kuwaiti environment and preserving valuable resources in collaboration with civil society organisations and projects.”
Almusaiteer said the recently launched recycling program will include awareness-raising meetings about the importance of preserving the environment, in addition to the distribution of special containers inside the company and its facilities to assemble plastic water and empty containers.
PIC is taking this initiative a step further by building a dedicated plant in collaboration with Omniya to recycle plastic products and waste.
The facility, currently under construction in Kuwait, will be the first factory to recycle PET which would help to significantly reduce the environmental damage caused by landfill, the company said.
“I am excited about the company’s latest efforts in the framework of social responsibility towards local community participation, aspiring to spread the culture of recycling to create new industries in the community to work on the application of sustainable development,” Almusaiteer said, highlighting the firm’s commitment to CSR. PIC recently launched another key initiative called ‘Kuwait Green Wall’.
As the name suggests the programme will see trees being planted near the borders of Kuwait in a bid to promote care for the environment and fight harmful emissions. It further underlines PIC’s commitment to clean energy sources and leaving a positive mark on society.
PIC also supports scientific competitions and projects for school students to clean up beaches, reduce energy consumption and promote the use of solar power and energy to reduce heat emission from factories among other initiatives.
