Qatar Fuel (Woqod) will set up seven new compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in Qatar within two years as part of its plans to promote the use of environmentally-friendly fuel.
The company said it planned to develop Qatar’s CNG sector under the “leadership” of Qatar Petroleum (QP).
Details from a board meeting on Monday showed that it had “refilled and sold” nearly 5.1mn metal, 1.4mn Shafaf (12kg) and 39,000 (6kg) LPG cylinders in Qatar last year.
Last year, the total sale of petroleum products in Qatar, including diesel, gasoline and jet fuel, reached 7,256mn litres, a 12.7% increase from figures in 2013.
Woqod said some 13 fuel stations are currently under construction across Qatar, with another one being built in neighbouring Saudi Arabia. Some of the new facilities are expected to be opened this year and others in 2016.
The company added that seven more CNG stations are in the design and tendering stages in various locations across the country and are scheduled for completion in 2015 or early 2016.
In June last year, Woqod set itself a target to operate at least 100 fuel stations in Qatar by 2018.
