South Africa’s SacOil started field development operations through its subsidiary Mena International Petroleum at Lagia oil field onshore Egypt.
An initial phase development will be conducted by Schlumberger Egypt, including hydraulic stimulation of wells 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.
Mena said if the completion of operations at each of these wells is successful, total daily production could reach 350 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
The company said it is specifically targeting the productive Nukhul geological formation.
A thermal recovery is also being planned for the first half of 2015 to further enhance oil production and recovery of the Lagia oil field reserves.
Operations commenced on Sunday and well results are expected by the end of January 2015.
SacOil is preparing and planning a second phase of development operations to start by June 2015, which includes the drilling of up to five additional wells in the field.
Mena has a 100% share of the field covering an area of approximately 32sq km on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.
The Lagia oil field has heavy oil (16-18° API) in shallow reservoirs and light oil potential in deeper reservoirs.
