Syrian prime minister Wael Al-Halqi visited Tehran earlier this month to discuss the ongoing export of Iranian oil to Syria.
Iran is Syria’s main supplier of oil, and Damascus is keen to ensure that supplies will continue despite international sanctions against Iran.
Oil production in Syria has all but stopped since western sanctions came into force nearly four years ago. Syria is now largely dependent upon Iranian oil.
During the recent visit to Tehran, Syrian and Iranian officials discussed “the provision of petroleum products by ensuring the regular arrival of oil tankers into Syrian ports”, according to the Syrian state news agency.
In July last year Iran granted Syria a $3.6 billion credit facility to buy oil products, according to officials and bankers at the time. Syria also imports oil from Iraq.
