Egypt is planning to boost its refineries’ daily production between 62,000 to 85,000 tonnes by end of 2020, Zawya news agency has reported.

According to the North African country Oil Minister, Sherif Ismail, Egypt’s annual production capacity currently stands at 35mn tonnes.

The country now only operates at 55% of its total refining capacity, he noted.

Ismail said it is very important to rehabilitate and upgrade old refineries in order to exploit full refining potential.

The oil minister also voiced plans for mandating a specialised company to review old refineries and apply the workplace and safety standard requirements and specifications.

“Ministry of Petroleum is aiming to achieve a leap in the capacity of its current refineries and to establish others to accommodate the amounts of imported oil,” Ismail said.
