Qatar has announced plans to invest in developing engineering PhD programmes and become a leader in the Middle East and North Africa region according to a study on the availability of postgraduate education in Doha.
Last year, Qatar Foundatio launched its first PhD program in collaboration with Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU). The program, called Qatar Foundation Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Energy Sciences (QF IDPES), was aimed at training and bringing more young talent to the region’s energy field.
In recent years, Qatar has invested in its education, research and development programs by adding advanced study programs to local universities’ curricula, opening the Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and unveiling the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS). The country has its annual Graduate Student Research Awards for recognising achievements of masters and PhD students in the engineering field.
“Qatar is now also developing PhD programs inside the country, an essential next step in progress towards Qatar becoming a sustainable, knowledge-based and creative economy,” said Dr. Wyatt Hume, director of Education, Training and Development, Qatar Foundation Research and Development. “PhD programs in Qatari institutions will add substantially to new intellectual property and new enterprise development inside Qatar, and will greatly accelerate the growth of Qatar’s overall research capabilities.”
