Iran has shown interest in purchasing Azerbaijani gas and explored the prospects of storing its gas in the underground storage facilities of the country.

Iran’s deputy minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mojtaba Khosrow-Taj said this Friday at a press conference in Baku. The deputy minister emphasized that the issue was discussed during his meeting with Rovang Abdulleyev, the head of Azerbaijan’s oil company (SOCAR).

Khosrow-Taj said that as part of its energy cooperation, Iran considers the possibility of establishing a joint enterprise with SOCAR to carry out activities in third countries such as Russia.

Azerbaijani gas is currently delivered to Iran under ‘swap’ operations to provide the Nakhchivan Autonomous republic which is under the blockade due to Armenia’s occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani territories with gas. The annual gas supply volume exceeds one million cubic meters.
