Workers threatening strike action over a pay dispute in the Kuwaiti oil & gas industry have agreed to postpone any strike action until after the celebrations for Kuwait’s national day.

The rift between workers and their employers was initially caused when the oil companies refused to reinstate a bonus scheme, known as the ‘success partnership bonus’.

Kuwait Petroleum Corporation said last month that the bonus scheme would be scaled back as the payments had become too excessive.

The strike action is supported by the Kuwaiti Oil Workers Union but three other oil workers union’s have walked away from strike action. The Kuwait Oil Workers Union says that it will go ahead with strike action unless its demands are met after Kuwait’s national day on the 25th February and Liberation Day on the 26th February.

Kuwait has said that whatever action is taken by the unions, steps will be taken to ensure that the country’s 3 million barrel per day production remains unaffected.
