Algeria’s key In Amenas gas plant, will resume operating at full capacity within weeks, a Senior Algerian energy official has said.

The plant, which was attacked by terrorists in 2013, previously produced 11.5% of Algeria’s natural gas output. The plant is currently operating at two thirds capacity and officials are hopeful that work on the last of the plant’s three processing units will be completed within the coming weeks.

The capacity of the site is estimated to be around 30 million cubic metres per day.

Norwegian firm Statoil are involved in production at the In Amenas plant. Speaking at the recent World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, Statoil’s executive vice president for development production international told Oil & Gas Middle East that the Algerian plant formed a big part of the company’s plans for 2014.

“It has taken a lot to get the plant back up and running and to get money back into the country to try and improve the security side of things. That is going to be a big part of what we have on the agenda for the coming year,” he said.

Forty oil workers died at In Amenas in 2013 after militants took the plants staff hostage during a four day siege.
